Good Food and Good Conversation with Rachel Remmes

and how to claim our authentic passions with joy
7

One of my favorite things about having a podcast is I get the chance to just email people and be like, hey will you talk with me for an hour? I have so many questions I want to ask you! This can be true of authors or bloggers or writers you admire from afar, but can also be true of your own in-real-life friends. We just don’t have too many opportunities, especially if you’re in a chaotic season with little kids, to sit down with our friends and ask them the deep-down important things. But when there is an episode deadline, somehow the time becomes available, we make it happen! So that’s what I got to do with my friend

, the voice behind the excellent substack .

I first met Rachel when we were both living in Baltimore and leading Blessed is She Bible studies. I was a new convert and don’t take this the wrong way, eager to find some ‘normal’ people I could connect with who shared my newfound faith. Rachel was down-to-earth, wicked smart, funny, and I knew I wanted to get to know her better the moment we met. I basically insisted she give me her number and then made sure we had a dinner date on the horizon. That dinner outing ended up being the first of many (it may surprise you to hear, but Baltimore has an amazing food scene and excellent restaurants!). We would share a bottle of wine and immediately start talking like we had known each other for years. I’ll always be so grateful for those important conversations.

Life has gotten very busy for both of us since. Rachel moved to New York City and now has two kids three and under (do the math!) and I have two little ones now as well. But we’ve kept in touch and I have truly loved following along as Rachel has discovered and embraced her authentic love for cooking amidst a very busy life caring for her young children.

Born of Wonder is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

On this episode, we discuss good food, cooking, writing, and discovering our authentic passions in a world full of distractions and mixed motivations. You'll get some great recipes and cooking tips as well as some broader personal reflections about how to establish a life that reflects our true joys and talents. We also both talk about the temptations of social media and mimetic desire (Rene Girard is always relevant, guys!) and how to carve out a truly meaningful life amidst all the noise.

I think you’ll really enjoy it. Thanks again to Rachel for coming on!

is a recovering academic and passionate at-home chef who lives in New York City with her husband and three young children. Although she has been cooking avidly for as long as she can remember, in October 2023 she launched a substack - . Her goal with this substack is to reignite an appreciation for at-home cooking by learning the fundamentals all while teaching her readers how to correctly salt meat and poach fish along the way.

Rachel, who earned a masters in art history, views cooking as a creative art form that adds beauty and meaning to our lives in the same way as a good book or a stunning painting. Readers of her substack can enjoy her two published cookbook reviews. Additionally they can anticipate more cookbooks reviews this year, along with theoretical dinner guest conversations, including one with writer/director, Greta Gerwig, and another with the 20th-centuty Norwegian novelist, Sigrid Undset.
