Just finished listening to this podcast episode and found it quite interesting. The differences between health care and education here versus Finland are striking to say the least. I definitely wish education wasn’t so expensive here in the U.S. We have a 529 Plan going for my children but college, I can’t even imagine how expensive it will be for them.

Great episode! 👌🏼

I am intrigued by this topic because, coming from a conservative background growing up, the narrative was how evil socialized medicine was in the Nordic countries--death committees and legalized abortion and so on. And also, the near universal aborting of kids with disabilities (I have a daughter with Down syndrome, so you can imagine we hear about this a lot.) I had wondered and sort of hoped those topics might come up in this conversation, but I suspect your guest is not coming at the world from a Christian world view, so it might not help to ask her to address it.

I have been writing crazily for the last 10 minutes and I just realized that what I need to do is write about it on my Substack for next week, referencing your podcast! Stay tuned... :)

Also this episode I did a year or so ago now maybe of interest to you! With a former lobbyist about our own changing and shifting political views over the years --

I look forward to reading! It is an interesting narrative that has been developed in the US over the past 50 years or so when it comes to knee-jerk reactions to universal health care. I find it a little odd. And of course in Finland and many other Scandinavian countries they have stricter abortion laws than we do. 12 weeks in Finland, for example, wheras many states in the US you can get an abortion with no restrictions up to 24 weeks. And these days the United States aborts children with down syndrome on pretty much the same level as other industrialized countries. These are big important questions, but you're right that my guest was not coming from a Christian perspective so it didn't seem the time or place. I mostly just wanted it to be an introduction to how these policies work in actuality, because I was pretty ignorant of them myself!

Can you point me to a comparison of those laws? I am trying to do a little searching on the topic but I'm not finding all that much that's helpful.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to find a great side by side - I've simply googled abortion laws in various countries, or assisted suicide in various countries, etc, to compare to the US. There is a wikipedia page here that compared the legality of euthanasia in various countries: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legality_of_euthanasia
